Binance estimates Thursday's security incident cost around $6.3 billion, with about $3 billion frozen onchain. The exchange first blamed a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, but its later investigation uncovered "additional points of breach" and described the attack as a "more complex" process that did not rely on a single engineer's permissions. Binance says no wallet private key leak was found and that it will cover all losses from its SAFU fund and company funds. Deposits have resumed, while withdrawals remain suspended as Binance works on a security revamp of the withdrawal service. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham reported the attacker moved $38.82 million of ETH to a new address and still holds $1.12 billion in ETH, plus significant amounts of BTC, TRX and SOL. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle froze roughly $1.8 billion in USDT and USDC. 1
