With over two-thirds of the world's mobile money value flowing through sub-Saharan Africa, the vulnerability of current public-key cryptography to quantum computing attacks poses a significant risk. The use of RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography in mobile money transfers means that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially break these encryption methods, compromising the financial security of millions. Although the threat has not yet materialized, the urgency to migrate to post-quantum cryptography is increasing1. This shift is critical to protecting the financial accounts of millions of Africans who rely on mobile money, and practitioners must prioritize the development and implementation of quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions to ensure the long-term security of these systems.
