A recent trial demonstrated the feasibility of 1.6 Tb/s quantum-safe network encryption on a live commercial network, marking a significant milestone in the development of secure communication systems. The test, conducted by Quantum Corridor, Ciena, and Toshiba, utilized a combination of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD) technologies to protect data transmitted between data centers in Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme optical encryption was integrated with Toshiba's QKD technology to create a hybrid approach to quantum-safe networking, which was validated on a production network1. This achievement highlights the growing importance of migrating to quantum-resistant cryptographic systems, as the advent of quantum computing threatens to compromise existing encryption methods.
